The more I think about it, the more I see that the Reservation in The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian is very similar to my community. First off, Arnold repeatedly explained how close every one was in the rez and how everyone basically knew each other. Obviously this is not completely true in my community because I'm not quite that popular (yet) to be close with EVERYONE in my neighborhood. But I do know quite a lot of people and my family does as well. Since we have been living in the same place for generations, just as Arnold and his family have, it is easy to get to know everyone around us. The closeness of the reservation and my community are positive comparisons, however there are some negative comparisons as well.
In the book, Arnold constantly expressed his feelings of feeling left out or feeling as if he didn't belong in either his school or his home.
"I was half indian in one place and half white in the other."
I can totally relate to this in my life. In my particular community, I'm not seen as fully mexican, although I am. But since my dad's side has green eyes and my mother's side has blonde hair, all my siblings have blonde hair and blue/green eyes. My complexion is lighter than some people as well, so I am kind of looked at as an outsider in my community of black hair, brown eyes and brown skin. So because of this, I can really relate to this feeling that Arnold has because people don't fully accept him in his own community.
Both of our communities are sort of really racist and the people judge easily based on what someone does (like going to a white school) or what someone looks like.
So I guess Pilsen and the Spokane Indian Reservation are not that different afterall.

Native Son
I never liked Bigger. I am sorry. I honestly tried liking him because I thought there was something I was missing since so many others liked him but I just never had sympathy for him. He has had so many chances throughout the book to just get away from it all and redeem himself and not do the things he had done. His thoughts may have justified some of the things he had done but overall I just think Bigger was crazy, legitimately mental. So I just think what has happened in the end had to happen eventually and it was justified.
You see, Bigger killed Mary Dalton, the daughter of his employer and the girlfriend of a member of the communist party. It may have been an accident but Bigger still had many opportunities to make everything better and just confess before things got worse. Then later, after getting into a huge mess with a ransom note, he killed again. Except this time, he killed his own girlfriend but not before brutally raping her. However he was not charged for this crime. When he was on trial, a lawyer named Max decided to represent him in court only to clear the name of the communist party. Bigger ended up confessing to the murder and was sentenced to death. Yes, I felt bad. But I strongly believe that anyone who kills intentionally (as he did Bessie), deserves to die themselves.

A Principle to Keep
One principle that i always live by no matter what the circumstance is that i always act friendly towards everyone. Especially people I don't know that well or people i do not know at all. I personally believe that it is very important to make a good first impression on someone. You never want anyone to think of you as inconsiderate or mean in any way just because you did not smile at them one time.
Every time i meet new people, i expect them to be friendly. I would assume that others expect the same from me. So that is why this is a principle i constantly try to keep. I strongly believe that friends are essential to have a successful life and school career. The way to make friends is to be nice to everyone from the beginning. A person will not want to be friends with someone who does not seem friendly and does not give off a good first impression.
So. all in all, i believe that in the long run it will be very beneficial and good for everyone if a person gives off a good first impression. So, this is why i keep this principle constantly and take it seriously.
