John Proctor: Hero or Stooge?

From the beginning, I have absolutely hated John Proctor for many reasons. This is including the fact that he, a married man, has had an affair with a 17 year-old girl. I also find John Proctor an easily resentful man. So it is really hard for me to say that in fact, I believe John Proctor is a hero. This is because I really believe that towards the end of the story, The Crucible, John actually did try saving Salem from the madness that was taking over the community. John was one of the only really sensible people in Salem that actually knew these accusations of witchcraft were absurd. John Proctor knew the truth about the girls and he wanted to let everyone in the community know it as well. He felt bad and did not want the others to be ignorant in the sense where they believed something that was completely made up. He wanted to basically 'save' Salem from this witchcraft madness, even if it meant tainting his own image. He would risk his own good name in order to get the truth known by everyone. "She used to serve me in my home, sir. A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything." John Proctor confessed to having an affair with Abigail, to get everyone to figure out she was lying when she accused others of witchcraft. "...a man will not cast away his good name sir, you surely know that." Here Proctor is explaining to the judge of the community that he is not just throwing away his good name for nothing, and that he is telling the truth. When I read this section, I gained a lot more respect for John Proctor as a character in this story. The fact that he was willing to give up his good reputation for the truth shows a lot about the man he is. I can definitely say that my feelings towards John have changed throughout the course of the story. So all in all, I truly believe that John Proctor is a hero.

There Goes The Neighborhood

The men had just come back from hunting and gathering our meal for that day, when they came across suspicious signs by the river bank. The chief inspected the objects that were clearly left behind from someone who wasn't from our tribe. There was a long piece of paper with weird symbols all over it. There were also these peculiar containers full of a liquid that smelled funny.

Suddenly, there were about ten light complected unusual looking men standing face to face with the hunters of our tribe. My first reaction was to flinch and prepare for the worst, but the white unusual men started speaking instead of attacking. Then, our chief responded back to the white men, in a broken version of their language.

Soon, these white men started becoming a part of our everyday lives. They would help our men gather food, start fires, and with everyday duties. Everyone in the tribe thought they were friendly and nice, because they seemed as if all they wanted to do was help us. But some part of me felt as if we couldn't trust them.

We ended up becoming so close to these white men that they would stay and sleep in our village. This disgusted me. We didn't know these people or what they were capable of. What if they murdered us all in our sleep? I was very unsure about these people. Maybe it was the color of their skin, maybe not. But nothing, no words from my elders could change the feeling of uneasiness in my stomach.

I knew i was right all along the day it happened. These men didn't have the same values as us. Why did we trust them at all in the first place? The white men had claimed they wanted something more substantial in their meal or something like that. So they murdered a foe. A FOE. A BABY DEER. This was alarming to all of us in the tribe, since animals and all life were very sacred to us. I couldn't help but think "I told you so."

Me

My name is Lydia Alvarez. I am fifteen years old. Some things about myself are that my favorite color is green, and I enjoy numerous activities, such as softball, running and dancing. English is actually my favorite subject in school, as well as History. I also love to read. Some more interesting things about me are that my favorite animal is a giraffe. My favorite food is sushi, and my favorite singer  is Shakira. My favorite book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I also have a lot of background. I was born in Chicago, but my father was born in Mexico City, Mexico. My mothers was also born in Chicago but her whole half of the family came from Chihuahua, Mexico. When I was born, i was named after my great-grandmother who lived to be 108 years old! My long term goals include going to medical school to become a pediatrician. However, my short term goals are to do good in all my classes this school year and to try out for the softball team. Someone i really look up to in my family is my grandma, because she always keeps her composure and she is often referred to as ''the glue that keeps us together''in my family, and I would like to be a person like that when i am older. A teacher I look up to now is Mrs. Garcia for almost the same reason. She always has a lot on her plate but she manages to get everything done, which i think is a good example for a student like me, who gets overwhelmed easily. So thats pretty much all about me right now. Thanks for reading!
